Coffee - Yes it's strategic!#

Okay, I guess this is slightly off topic for this blog but it's strategic for me!

Check out my post on the "Lukardo" (AKA as a Frontado). A coffee creation i had the pleasure of "refining" (rather than strickly creating) recently.

Focusing of the Blog (Strategy, Architecture, Governance & Technology)#

Not that I'm changing things drastically but I'm focusing my blog a bit more on the what the "newish" titles says: Strategy, Architecture, Governance & Technology. Most of the topics are/will be focused on doing good IT (Strategy, Architecture and Governance) and the interesting technologies that either align with this or just generally catch my attention. Hopefully most of my recent postings have already been consistent with this.

I'm also thinking about moving blog platforms. Currently I'm running this on the .NET 1.1 of DasBlog. I like the control I've had with this software but it is starting the lack a few features. Any suggestions from any other bloggers out there? I'm open to either a hosted offering where I can use my own domain cheaply or changing blog software on my machine. The key requirements are as many useful web 2.0 blog features as possible and the ability to easily migrate all my existing posts.

Joel Spolsky – Article on 5 easy ways for a project to fail#

Good article from Joel Spolsky on 5 easy ways that software projects fail. I really like this article as Joel articulates the common problems of software development very well. This article was forwarded to me from a person inside my company with the subject "Harsh Words from Joel Spolsky". Personally I don't think they are harsh enough and my thoughts on the article are as follows:

"This is really obvious stuff in my opinion.

Our industry is littered with many people who do not have a proper education in IT, let alone being trained in managing projects properly. Many of these people are put in charge of making decisions or signing off decisions around projects and typically end up making ignorant simplistic decisions. Often many of the stakeholders of projects can be like this and the failure is in getting them to realise the implications of a situation that creates many of the problems discussed in this article.

Ask a surgeon - does he/she do half an eye operation because it costs less?

Does a civil engineer design half a bridge because of a deadline constraint?

A big part of this is immaturity in our industry and not following many of the standards set in other professions such as engineering, law and medicine. It's all basic planning techniques and basic acknowledgement of the complexity of a problem. And it often stems from people who simply did not know what they are doing and would never admit it."

I hope I don't offend anyone – certainly not my intention. But I have to say I do feel very passionately about this issue and believe many roots of the issue stem from poor education in our industry around broad (or horizontal) skills. Feel free to publish your thoughts as comments…

Instant contact – a demon?#

Right now, people who work with me can MSN me, Skype Me, Yahoo me, Email me, call me on my Cell, call me on my desk phone, text me, track me down on my blog or on LinkedIn, walk over and see me and god forbid send me snail me. Is it just me or are we too connected in this day and age? The thing I find hardest is to concentrate on one task for more than a few hours without being disturbed. These days if I need to concentrate I usually end up turning everything off - not ideal but necessary. Anyone else got any thoughts with managing being in contact versus distraction and focus? (It's Friday arvo, and it's noisy in the office and all my contact channels are going mad – and I'm trying to write two documents – I might as well give up! J)

LinkedIn Profile#

I've finally spent some time on setting up my network and career profile on LinkedIn. This seems to be one of the free best online services for managing this type of personal information. I particularly like the network contact features which help me keep my network up to date. To see my linked in profile with my career history, go to http://www.linkedin.com/in/lukassvoboda

Proxy.pac Files#

Okay this is a pretty technical post, but it does have an important enterprise implications. The proxy file (convention is to use proxy.pac) is a javascript file that defines how web browsers can automatically choose the appropriate proxy server for fetching a given URL. This is very useful to use in a company where you might have different proxy servers in different geographies and you want the person's web browser to automatically use the right proxy server. The file can also do things like turn off the use of a proxy server if it isn't in the currently used network. This is very useful for laptop users who might use their laptops on a home network at the end of the day. So in summary a proxy.pac file stops you from having to reconfigure proxy settings for your browser every time you change networks.

My old company uses my new company#

In this Computerworld article, Provenco moves to SalesForce.com CRM with Fronde as the implementer. Talk about a small world, I've worked for Provenco before when it was called Advantage Group and I've just recently joined Fronde….

Apple loses 4 billion in 6 six minutes due to bogus email#

I had to wipe the tears of laughter away after reading this one. Apparently apple lost 4 billion worth of market cap in 6 minutes after predictions of iPhone and Leopard delays. Turns out the predictions were in fact based on a bogus internal email.

Now that's capitalism gone bad…

Why software commoditisation is a myth#

Absolutely brilliant article by Frank Hayes Framingham over at Computerworld on software commoditization, very rational and very much on the ball. I think I agree with almost all parts of the article, which is very rare for me with a trade article J

Microsoft alleges patent violations by Open Source Community#

Interesting article in Computerworld which states that Microsoft wants the Open Source community to pay royalties for 235 alleged patent violations – many inside Linux and Open Office. Very interesting ploy from Microsoft, I can't say I agree with the tactic as I think it's just going to create more negative publicity for Microsoft and alienate the Open Source community even more…

Datacom Acquire Sydney’s Relate#

Interesting to see the expansion of Datacom with the purchase of Sydney company Relate. Also very interesting to see the "STAR" initiative that will see Datacom's business processes all come online. I can hardly wait for the low cost labour online ordering process :)

Software as a Service vs Software AND Services#

Okay, you can probably tell that I'm reading Computerworld at the moment, but I find this article from Computerworld funny in a weird way. Is it talking about Software as a Service as the dominant model into the future for software products or is it talking about selling software at low cost with services attached? It almost sounds to me as if the article has got the two confused. Puritanically I see SaaS being a distribution and maintenance mechanism for software, i.e. it's one way to provide a software service but not the only way. Definitely a weird story - this type of press can only service to confuse the whole SaaS issue. Agree? Disagree?

iGoogle, what’s in a new name?#

In the last few days Google has renamed its personalized web page offering "iGoogle". An interesting name considering Apple use "i" in all their branding. Out of shear reading between the lines this gets me thinking that Google and Apple might be up to something. I guess someone else is thinking along the same lines…

Welcome to my new blog!#

Welcome to my new blog folks. I've decided to take down my old svoboda.co.nz site and start to rework things. Firstly I wanted to use some sort of "standard" blogging software as the software I originally wrote a few years back is dated and doesn't support all the good stuff blogs are meant to support these days. Secondly I want to have a proper place to display all my photos, music and videos.

So this blog will be my professional, work focused blog - i.e. all things Microsoft from an Strategic/Enterprise Architect's perspective. Expect to see philosophical items such as architecture in general, governance and my views on where Microsoft is going through to such things as the latest and greatest Microsoft technologies such as MOSS, WSSV3, VSTS, .NET 3.0, Mobility and many more.

Technology for this new blog I've moved over to dasblog for the moment. I'll probably end up moving to WSS V3 later on this year depending on how things go.
