Putting the “A” in SOA into Practice#

Good article on Computerworld regarding the architecture aspect of SOA and how it is the most important part. Very interesting article by Galen Gruman.

I think one of the better ways to tackle those silos is by SOA-wrappers.
Instead of going full-power on an organizational SOA or build SOA silos -
identify the points where the silos need to connect, and make them into
services using SOA architecture. You then have SOA in place, over the whole
organization almost at once, even if it's only "a little bit" of SOA.
After that, when SOA is in place, you can start changing the enterprise
architecture, when part of it is already working the way you want it, even
though you might end up changing again the first services you implemented,
in order to make them conform with the emerging architecture you ended up with.

Yeah Nimo, definitely makes a lot of sense. This is a strategy that's been adopted by several customers I've worked with on SOA strategy - it's a good easy road into SOA.
